Our first science unit of the year will be on MAGNETS . The following are vocabulary and concept information your child should master for the unit. These concepts will be covered on the final assessment.

How do we use magnets in our lives?
What types of objects are attracted to magnets and why?

Vocabulary:
Magnet - an object that attracts iron, nickel and cobalt.
Magnetic poles- the ends of a magnet (NORTH AND SOUTH)
Magnetism – the power to attract
Attract – to pull together
Repel – to push apart
Magnetic field – the area around a magnet
Iron – a metal that is attracted to magnets
Lodestone – a rock that has magnetic properties – a natural magnet
Bar magnet – a magnet shaped like a bar
Horseshoe magnet – a magnet shaped like a horseshoe
Concepts:
The EARTH is a giant magnet and its magnetic field is strongest at the north and south poles.
All magnets have two poles (north and south).
Opposite poles attract and same poles repel.
Many are found in many or our electrical appliances.
There are permanent, temporary and electromagnetic magnets.
