ENGLISH UNIT: Sentences, Subjects and Predicates

ENGLISH:  Our first language unit deals with sentence types and appropriate punctuation.

TOPIC:  SENTENCES

Vocabulary:  Subject .  Predicate.   Declarative. Imperative. Interrogative. Exclamatory.

Concepts:

You need both a subject and a predicate to make a complete sentence.

The subject tells whom or what the sentence is about.

The predicate tells what the subject does.

There are four types of sentences:

1.     DECLARATIVE – Makes a statement and ends with a period.

I like cheese.

2.     IMPERATIVE – Gives a command and ends with a period (most of the time.)

Eat your dinner now.

3.     INTERROGATIVE – Asks a question and ends in a question mark.

Are you hungry?

4.     EXCLAMATORY – shows strong emotion and ends with an exclamation mark.

There is a fire in the kitchen!
