HOMEWORK POLICY

Note on HOMEWORK:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!

Students have homework every night, Monday through Thursday.  I rarely give homework on Fridays, but sometimes there are expectations, like a project or studying for a test.

Every night your child is expected to spend 15 to 20 minutes reading independently or with a partner (it can be fun to vary this – so sometimes they read alone and sometimes aloud with someone else.) They should also do some Accelerated Math (10 to 15 minutes) each night. And review their spelling words for the week. (You can read more about Accelerated Reading and Accelerated Math on my blog.)  They will also have assignments in Study Island.

THIS IS IN ADDITION TO any other work they bring home as in unfinished classwork, a worksheet or short assignment on some days.  Just because your child does not bring home a separate assignment, does not mean they have no homework. The daily expectations will not be written in the agenda because it is too time consuming to write: read for 15 minutes, work on Accelerated math, complete the Study Island assignments and study spelling each night. But those ARE expectations.

Other homework assignments are short - ten to 15 minutes - and are generally used to review concepts covered in class.  However, homework could also include unfinished classwork, long term projects, and studying for unit tests.  Homework could take from 30 minutes to an hour, sometimes more or less. However, if you find homework is taking well over an hour consistently, please talk to me.
