FYI: End of the year info

Dear Parents,

Our classes are scheduled to take the math MAP test and the reading MAP test next week.  Study Island is a great resource to use at home to help your child review for these tests.

To celebrate the end of testing, we are planning to have a fiesta on Tuesday, May 12.  Look for a note in this week’s Friday folder indicating the item your child needs to bring for the fiesta.  The note says "next week" but the fiesta is on the 12th...the following week. (I did not want to run it again and waste the paper.) See the note to see if there are any items you wish to donate to the party.

Students are earning an ice cream sundae by learning all of their multiplication and division facts.  Please help your child study these facts at home. The goal is to learn each set of facts quickly and accurately. Two  students in our classroom have already earned their entire sundaes, and we are hoping more students will be able to do so next week! The ice cream sundae party is scheduled for Thursday, May 14.

Students will also sign yearbooks in the gym on May 14. Any child who ordered a yearbook will receive it on this day.  Students may bring money to purchase snacks, but please do not send more than $5.00.

All library books are due by Friday, May 8. The media center is collecting paperback books for our book swap scheduled for the week of May 11. For every two gently used paperback chapter books donated, a student will receive one book credit to shop at the swap. Only students who bring in books will be allowed to shop outside 3rd grade reading level.

Please make sure your cafeteria account is paid up and all pictures and/or money have been returned. We have to hold report cards for any students who owe money.

Field Day is just around the corner, so mark your calendar for Friday, May 15! Our theme this year is Fun in the Sun. Activities will be held on the OCES campus and the OCMS football field and are scheduled to take place from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm.

Our third grade awards ceremony will be held on Monday, May 18 at 9:30 in the cafeteria. You will receive an invitation in next week’s Friday folder if your child is receiving an award.

These dates are included in your May RAH calendar your child is bringing home today - it is orange.

Have a great weekend!

NEW STUDY ISLAND ASSIGNMENTS

There are several new assignments for your child to attempt in the Study Island program.  They all involving subjects we have been working with in class.  They are due by mid December, but certainly can be completed sooner.

For ELA:

Compare and Contrasting texts
Capitalization rules
Punctuation Rules
Sentence Structure

For Math:

Using the Multiples of 10

I note that there are a few students who are NOT attempting any of the Study Island practice.  These assignments ARE considered part of homework and will help your child be more successful in school.  Practice makes perfect, and practicing on the computer is a lot more fun than the old fashioned work sheets most of us had to complete for homework.  However, without practice, there is less opportunity or chance of improvement.  Please encourage your child to take advantage of the Study Island program which is paid for by our generous PTO funds.

If you do not remember how to get your child on to the Study Island website for practice, please contact me for directions.  (You may also consult the side bar on my BLOG site for more information.)

KEYBOARDING!!!!

We have learned that is it quite possible the students will need to take the end of the year MILESTONES test on computer.  Part of the test includes a written response portion - some short answer and an extended response item for each content area.  That means students may need to TYPE out their answers on computer.  Well, as you may imagine, that will be difficult if they have no typing skills!  Now, we will try to work in a little practice in school, but realistically, it is unlikely we will get much practice time in with limited computer access and other content to teach.  The more familiar the children are with keyboarding skills, the more successful they will be on this portion of the test.  I am asking for your help.  If possible, I am asking that you have your child practice some keyboarding skills at home. There is a link on our school website for a variety of games and practice of keyboarding skills.  Just go to the school webpage, click on the link to the media center (on left side of page under main menu) then choose the online resources tab at the top.  There is a link to keyboarding practice.   Or you could follow the following link directly:

Thank you for your support.

Weekly Update

The “Crowing About Biographies” project is due on Thursday, October 23.  If your child chose to do this project, please bring the scarecrow, quote (on the white cardstock), and timeline (on the long white paper) to school on Thursday.  Please return the rubric (on the back of the orange sheet).

Please encourage your child to visit www.studyisland.com. This is a great resource for reviewing the skills we have learned so far!  Our goal is for each child to complete all the skills by the end of the year.  Visit app.studyisland.com and students can log on with a tablet, smartphone, or other mobile device.

The OCES Scholastic Book Fair will be from Friday, October 17 - Thursday, October 23.  We will have an amazing selection of books to choose from!  Mark your calendar for the "Grand" Event, on Wednesday, Oct. 22, where someone "Grand" in your child's life may eat lunch with him or her and visit the book fair.  Our class will attend the book fair time on Monday, October 20 at 7:50.  You are welcome to join us at this time to shop with your child.

It's time to send in all those box tops you've been collecting. Box Tops for Education is an easy and fun way for us to raise funds for our school. Each box top is worth 10 cents, and they really add up!  Just send them to school in a sealed envelope or Ziploc bag labeled with your child’s first and last name as well as my name. All box tops are due on Friday, October 24th. The class at each grade that sends in the most Box Tops will win a doughnut or ice cream party.

Report cards are in the Friday folder.  Please keep the report card but sign and return the envelope

We had a great FUN RUN this morning!  The kids had a fantastic time and really pushed themselves... I am very proud of them all.

If you did not make a contribution but still wish to help out the school, feel free to go online and donate or send in a flat donation on Monday morning. Your child can still earn prizes through Monday.

Sincerely,
